Building Structures 3

FAST-BHA057-AAk. rok: 2026/2027

The subject is focused on developing and deepening knowledge in the field of civil engineering. The subject mainly covers the envelope and completion structures of buildings, their detailed solutions, properties and conditions of use on buildings.

Lecture syllabus

  1. Types of the most commonly used roof coverings, principles of design and use.
  2. Details of the truss solution, single-skin, double-skin flat roofs and roof sheathing.
  3. Construction plumbing work. Details of implementation of pitched and flat roof structures.
  4. Building envelope structure – concepts, terminology, functions, boundary conditions of design, basic design principles. Wall cladding – principles of solution of single-skin sandwich wall structures with external (possibly also internal) insulation. Materials and technologies of application of external insulation (anchoring, bonding, surface treatment).
  5. Wall cladding – principles of solution and material variants of single-skin homogeneous structures. Design principles and variants of placement of thermal insulation on the external wall.
  6. Lightweight external cladding, sandwich panels, glazed facades – use, construction and material types, anchoring.
  7. Openings – windows, doors.
  8. Openings – windows, doors.
  9. Suspended ceilings.
  10. Expansion and distribution joints of load-bearing structures of the upper and lower structures. Expansion and distribution joints of non-load-bearing structures.
  11. Chimneys and ventilation/air vents.
  12. Completion and finishing work.

Exercise syllabus

  1. Introduction to the exercise. Design and assessment of two roof envelope compositions of a residential attic.
  2. Processing of two details of a pitched roof.
  3. Processing of two details of a flat roof.
  4. List of plumbing products.
  5. Processing of roof details - consultation.
  6. Design and assessment of the composition of the building envelope.
  7. Design and assessment of the composition of the building envelope.
  8. Details of window installation.
  9. List of products - windows, doors.
  10. Design and assessment of two floor compositions.
  11. Detail of the execution of two types of suspended ceilings.
  12. Detail of chimney sheeting.
  13. Credit.

Learning outcomes

Professional knowledge: The student will gain common knowledge about building envelopes and completion structures, knowledge about the properties of used building materials. He/she has knowledge about the requirements of legal regulations and standards regarding completion structures.

Professional skills: After completing the course, the student is able to apply standard procedures for solving details of building envelopes and completion structures, can design commonly used structures and evaluate them in terms of the requirements placed on them from a construction-physical perspective. He/she can make a list of individual elements and their properties as a basis for preparing a construction budget and a basis for high-quality execution of a construction work.

Competence: In construction practice, the student is capable of independently designing and assessing the basic structures of all building envelopes and completion structures. He/she is prepared to acquire in-depth knowledge in subsequent courses.
