The English for Intermediate exam is a proficiency test. To prepare for this exam, the Department of Social Sciences recommends two courses: English for Intermediate 1 and English for Intermediate 2.
Both courses offer semester-long instruction. These courses are particularly recommended for students whose English proficiency is below the B1 level. Students must pass the English for Intermediate exam to complete the requirements.
Learning outcomes
The exam specifically tests students' grammatical knowledge in the following areas: Present simple and past tense, Future tenses: simple future, 'going to' future, and present continuous for future. Present perfect and past simple tense. Present perfect continuous and past continuous tense. Past tense. Comparative and superlative adjectives. Articles. Prepositions. Modal verbs. Adjectives ending in -ed/-ing. First and second conditional clauses. Sequence of tenses. Indirect speech. Gerunds and infinitives.
The exam specifically tests students' vocabulary knowledge in the following areas related to civil engineering: Studies and majors in civil engineering. Employment in construction, tools, and construction machinery. Construction project management, hard and soft skills. Civil engineering specializations: Building materials, Architecture, Urban engineering, Environmental engineering, Surveying
Construction and transport engineering, Water management.
By passing the exam, students demonstrate that they can communicate in English at CEFR level B1 (intermediate). Successful candidates show the ability to use intermediate English grammar and vocabulary effectively in a range of typical construction-related contexts.
By passing the exam, students demonstrate that they can communicate effectively in English at CEFR level B1 (intermediate). This proficiency enables them to: Travel abroad with confidence. Communicate with colleagues in professional settings. Study in the field of civil engineering at an intermediate level. These skills align with the communication standards set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for B1 level learners.

The exam is oral and lasts up to 25 minutes but may be shorter if it becomes evident that the students being tested have not yet reached the required level. The exam consists of several components:
A minimum overall score of 50% is required to pass the exam.
