The chapter provides access to the concepts of TE and TM waves, with the motivation that low dimensional structures are used in advanced lasers. The chapter go on to consider, briefly, techniques for waveguide analysis. It contains sections on both linear and nonlinear advanced waveguides and, finally, a discussion of spatial solitons.
