Biomedically oriented students of the Brno University of Technology are prepared for the development of technology for medicine in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. The development of equipment which enables estimation of the central aortic pressure waveform by mathematical transformation of radial tonometry pressure can serve as an example. Such a process is composed of several steps, e.g. recording of pulse wave on radial artery, reconstruction of the central aortic waveform by mathematical transformation by means of generalized transfer function and estimation of the augmentation index. The augmentation index is a measure of aortic stiffness. Such an approach is important in patients with hypertension, because the auscultatory method of blood pressure measurement used as a standard is insufficiently reliable for the diagnostics and control of therapy. The main reason for this is spontaneous fluctuation of blood pressure. The device proposed is not generally used, but it is prospective for both patients and medical doctors.
