Automatic surveillance systems are an importantemerging application of on-line simple or compound eventdetection algorithms in video or audio data. The nature ofsuch systems implies several requirements on the usedalgorithms. The system ability to give the response on-lineis the main topic addressed in this work. The paperpredefines the requirements for each system recognitionmodule that must work in real-time or faster.This paper describes and analyses several eventrecognition algorithms based on video processing,concerning the applicability in on-line surveillancesystems. Two main trends are addressed with focus on themethods' speed and robustness. Statistical approaches arethe basis for simple event detectors whereas spatiotemporalrules define compound event detectors.Examples of statistical approaches are ad-hoc bicycledetector, dog detector based on AdaBoost classifier andexploitation of Hidden-Markov-Models for trajectoryclassification. The compound event approach isdemonstrated on detection of "dangerous occurrence ofthe person on the platform edge" in undergroundscenario. The methods process the video data fromstandard low-resolution CCTV surveillance system.The developed approaches are evaluated on real dataand applied in the real sites in underground scenarios.
