This paper explores the influence of so far neglected variables on nepotism within family firms and their implications for sustainability and operational effectiveness. Using a multi-case study methodology based on a sample of family firms, this study explores examine factors that possibly impact nepotism in ways not previously documented in the literature. Specifically, the dynamics of gender, the closeness of family relationships, and participation in decision-making are essential for the successful integration of family members into business roles. This, in turn, contributes to the long-term sustainability of family enterprises. By introducing these novel insights, the study broadens the understanding of nepotism dynamics, advocating for a more nuanced approach that considers various interpersonal and organizational factors.
