Carotenogenic yeasts are renowned for their capability to synt- hesize a range of bioactive compounds, such as beta-glucans, lipids, carotenoids, and various antioxidants. They also hold significant industrial potential as biotransformation agents, ca- pable of converting by- products from diverse food industry sectors—including coffee grounds, whey, poultry fat, feathers, glycerol, and waste oils—into valuable products. This research focuses on repurposing waste poultry feathers as nitrogenous substrates, waste poultry fat and frying oil as carbon sources and whey as combined substrate for the cultivation of carote- nogenic yeasts. The initial cultivation was conducted in Erlen- meyer flasks for laboratory screening purposes. Among several strains of red yeast tested, Cystofilobasidium macerans exhibi- ted notable biomass growth (18.8±0.3 g/L). Further investigati- on is required to assess the growth performance of these caro- tenogenic yeast strains in laboratory bioreactors, which could potentially serve as models for industrial application.
