In the past few years, global pandemic and geopolitical events have impacted nearly every aspect of our lives, highlighting the importance of resilient and self-sufficient systems, adding another parameter to the complexity of today's world that is struggling with issues of overpopulation, limited resources, environmental conservation, and climate change. Resilient systems are imperative, and the aim of the present work is to review how the sustainable development of energy, water and environmental systems can support this goal. By building on the on the works of SDEWES Conference series recent advances in each area are underlined. It can be concluded that sustainable solutions should restore global unity by initially fostering national self-sufficiency goals.
