Biomass is one of the most considerable sources of energy. Animal residue, industrial residue, municipal waste, sewage, forestry crops and waste from agricultural crops such as wheat straw, grain dust, hazelnut and others are readily available as biomass energy. In the previous two centuries, the human population has increased by seven times. The environment has suffered as a result of enormous population growth. As a result, we have significant problems in terms of environmental protection and energy sustainability. When a substance or energy is released into the environment at a very fast rate, then the environment can decompose, disperse, recycle, or store it in a less harmful form and cause pollution. The use of fossil fuels and different traditional fuels is polluting the environment, which can cause severe health issues and environmental problems. At the same time, climate change and global warming are serious threats. The abundance of biomass and its immense potential as a renewable energy source makes it a suitable option for conversion and pollution reduction. However, the use of biomass-derived energy sources can contribute to improving the environment. The proper handling and productive use of biomass lead to less garbage in the land. Syngas, biochar and bio-oil are produced by thermal treatment of biomass by using different methods like gasification and pyrolysis. Presently these environmentally efficient, cost-effective and energy storing materials are pretty valuable for numerous environmental applications. However, in the future, rapid use of biomass and biomass-derived material will play a significant role in socio-economic and sustainable environmental development by raising the standards of humans. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
