Improved adhesion of electrospun polymer mats on electrospinning textile support has been verified for plasma chemical modification of the polypropylene spunbond fabric. The plasma species bring extra energy and reactive radicals to the materials in contact with plasma and the inert surfaces of synthetic polymers such as polypropylene are activated to attach more strongly the electrospun polymer nanofibers. The modification of the spunbond surface chemistry was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and further characterization methods. Both, the low pressure and atmospheric pressure plasma chemical modifications had a positive effect on the adhesion but the technology based on atmospheric pressure plasma discharge offers better scalability and lower initial investment costs.
