Microbial surface active substances (biosurfactants) are amphiphilic compounds produced by a wide range of bacteria. There are a number of advantages over oil-based surfactants. Biosurfactants are not toxic and, moreover, are fully biodegradable. It can also be obtained from renewable sources and operate within a wide range of pH, temperature or salinity.
