A study into the performance of solar chimneys and solar PV powered fans in building ventilation was carried out with the use of numerical simulations. The performance of a solar chimney was compared with the performance of a DC fan powered by solar photovoltaics. The comparison was carried out for the same area of the irradiated surface - area of the solar absorber plate in case of the solar chimney and the area of the PV module in case of the fan powered by photovoltaics. The two studied cases were compared under various intensity of the incident solar radiation. The results indicate that the PV powered fans outperform solar chimneys in terms of the achieved air mass flow rates. Moreover, ventilation with the PV powered fans offers more flexibility in the arrangement of the ventilation system and in case of battery storage also better control of the air flow rates.
