The focus of this paper lies on monitoring of the rail defects in curves of small radii, especially long-pitch corrugation. This article follows contributions, which were presented at previous years of Young Scientist conference. The author provides further details of the formation and development of this imperfection of the rails and describes some of the methods to reduce the development of short waves in this contribution. Part of the paper is focused on the measurement of tramway tracks of Dopravni podnik mesta Brna. Author compares measurement of tramway tracks with monitoring of railway infrastructure. The article also brings the view on differences in quantity and quality of defects of running surface of rail heads when comparing these kinds of tracks. In addition, different approaches of reduction of the development of the long-pitch corrugation, applied by the infrastructure managers, are included in the comparison.
