Forward error correction (FEC) coding, which works without feedback from the receiver, helps in achieving lower bit error probabilities leading to higher data transmission quality. FEC is suitable for low data rate applications, particularly in satellite systems, as no request for retransmission is required. This paper describes in brief, the design considerations that need to be taken into account in realizing such schemes.
