O projektu

Transitioning to zero-carbon steelmaking requires a comprehensive understanding of the surface-related impacts of this shift. The surface quality of advanced steel grades is essential for mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, aesthetics, and downstream processes, all dependent on precise control of alloying and processing conditions. However, incorporating residual elements from recycled scrap—driven by circularity requirements—introduces complexities that alter oxide scale behavior during steel processing. These alterations include changes in oxide growth, descalability, heat transfer efficiency, and pickling ability. This study addresses these challenges by producing key steel grades and subjecting them to laboratory and pilot-scale simulations of reheating, descaling, hot rolling, and pickling. The primary objective is to establish relationships between alloying and processing conditions that effectively manage the implications of residual elements in the oxide scale. By developing comprehensive guidelines, this project aims to support steel producers in their decision-making during the transition to carbon-neutral processes, ensuring high surface quality across a diverse range of steel grades. The outcomes will provide invaluable long-term benefits for the steel industry by promoting sustainability and maintaining competitive excellence for decades to come.
