An effective method for carrying out the performance-based design of concrete structures is the use of suitable predictive models. They are needed because it is necessary to consider the performance characteristics of a given structure and to estimate how the resistance of that structure will change over time. It is of great importance to check the probability of exceeding limit conditions and to assess the service life, which necessitates the utilization of effective probabilistic software tools. This paper discusses the durability limit states of concrete structures and the consequences of the choice of model. Two groups of models are partially compared and evaluated utilizing numerical examples, these being models of carbonation depth (4 models) and chloride ingress (5 models), with comparisons being made with field or laboratory findings. As many un-certainties are involved in degradation processes the probabilistic approach is used, which also enables the reliability-based prognosis of service life. A recently developed software tool that may serve to facilitate the effective decision making of designers and clients is briefly described.
