Recently words such as SOAP and web services have become frequently used terms in the context of communication over the web. These technologies provide the techniques how the complex user-defined data objects can be transmitted over the network using standard protocols. This article deals with the basic characteristics of these technologies and their possible use in the design and implementation of own application-layer communication protocol.
