A necessary part of the design or assessment of structures in terms of their service life is the determination of the influence of the degradation effects on building materials and design elements over time, that is, the influence of the environment of a structure. Mathematical modelling and simulation of such effects, particularly of the degradation processes going on in materials, are necessary. Also the outcomes of experimental laboratory methods and observations of existing structures under real conditions have to be used. Note that only numerical procedures can sufficiently deal with the random character of the processes and variables involved; this means that probabilistic approaches will be employed in most cases.
