Members of open cross-sections are common in steel structures of buildings and engineering structures. In many cases, they are subjected to transverse loads (e.g., in connections or due to point loads caused by wheels of cranes if the member is part of a crane runway). This article focuses on the specific problem of transverse load applied close to the end of the member with the aim of investigating and quantifying this influence on member resistance. First, the problem is introduced with some examples of its practical applications in structures. A brief literature overview and current state of knowledge are provided, followed by the description of respective provisions in currently valid design codes for steel structures. The substantial part of the paper is the presentation of results of experimental and advanced numerical investigations of steel members subjected to transverse load at various distances from the member end. Where possible, the results are compared with resistances obtained using design codes. An improvement of buckling resistance for the web in transverse compression component is suggested. Also, an analytical method in line with current design methods is proposed for the case of concentrated load close to the member end, for which the current design rules are very simplified or mostly missing altogether.
