Affects and emotions are receiving increased attention in housing studies as conceptual and empirical tools for comprehending housing situations and conditions. Through an autoethnography of collaborative housing in the Czech Republic and Tucson, Arizona, United States, involving participatory workshops, interviews and casual encounters, we document the relevance and ambivalent character of affects and emotions in housing (research). We contribute to the relational theory of emotions and develop the argument that affects and emotions are crucial meaning-making devices that (1) on the ontological level might be understood as infrastructures which bind together housing subjects and structures; (2) epistemologically focusing on emotions provides relevant interpretative clues to make sense of often ambivalent and complex (research) situations; and (3) understanding and acknowledging politically the ontological-epistemological relevance of affects and emotions might translate into their recognition for housing policies, which may result in more legitimate, inclusive and participatory (housing) politics and practices.
