Material and Volumetric Comparative Analysis of Informal Settlements in the Global South is a research study examining the spatial, material, and developmental characteristics of informal settlements across selected case studies in the Global South (Addis Ababa, Kathmandu, Manila, and Cairo). The paper applies a comparative analytical matrix focused on housing materiality, volumetric growth, and living conditions to identify patterns of incremental development and resident-driven transformation. By reframing informal settlements as evolving urban environments rather than planning failures, the research highlights local agency, diverse development trajectories, and implications for inclusive urban policy and planning strategies.
