A new trend in structural design, the so called Performance Based design is a function-oriented design approach taking into account the target performance quality, e.g. required level of reliability, structural service life, optimisation of life cycle cost, environmental consequences and others. The relevant standards, methods, computational techniques and design tools are discussed.
