This paper deals with unsupervised collection ofinformation from traffic surveillance video streams. Deploymentof usable traffic surveillance systems requires minimizing ofefforts per installed camera - our goal is to enroll a newview on the street without any human operator input. Wepropose a method of automatically collecting vehicle samplesfrom surveillance cameras, analyze their appearance and fullyautomatically collect a fine-grained dataset. This dataset can beused in multiple ways, we are explicitly showcasing the followingones: fine-grained recognition of vehicles and camera calibrationincluding the scale. The experiments show that based on theautomatically collected data, make&model vehicle recognition inthe wild can be done accurately: average precision 0.890. Thecamera scale calibration (directly enabling automatic speed andsize measurement) is twice as precise as the previous existingmethod. Our work leads to automatic collection of traffic statisticswithout the costly need for manual calibration or make&modelannotation of vehicle samples. Unlike most previous approaches, our method is not limited to a small range of viewpoints (suchas eye-level cameras shots), which is crucial for surveillanceapplications.
