O projektu

Mitigating global warming, reducing emissions from combustion engines, and advancing sustainable energy technologies are urgent global challenges. Demand for high-energy-density batteries is therefore increasing to accelerate electrification. While electric vehicles currently rely on lithium-ion batteries, their limited energy density restricts driving range, motivating the search for alternative chemistries. Lithium–sulphur (Li–S) batteries, which rely on abundant, low-cost, and non-toxic sulphur while still offering a high theoretical capacity, are a promising option. However, commercialisation is hindered by polysulphide shuttling, poor conductivity, and large volume changes during cycling. AURORA aims to develop a novel Li-S cathode based on porous carbon derived from organic waste to overcome these limitations and enable stable, sustainable, and high-capacity Li-S pouch cells.
