O projektu
This project aims to advance understanding of friction-induced instabilities—particularly squeal noise—in rolling-sliding contacts such as the wheel-rail interface. We will develop high-fidelity 3D finite element and reduced-order models that incorporate transient friction laws, going beyond existing point-contact and static friction assumptions. Through dedicated experiments on pin-on-disc and twin-disc rigs (including one with a real tram wheel and variable angle of attack), we will capture and analyze squeal onset, chaos-like oscillations, and multi-mode interactions under realistic contact conditions. The results will validate new mechanisms of friction-induced vibration, including the possibility of squeal occurring at off-modal frequencies and in chaotic regimes. By integrating experimental data with simulation findings, the project will provide novel insights into the fundamental physics of frictional instabilities and support the design of more effective strategies to predict and mitigate squeal noise in rail applications
