Emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, are a significant problem in today’s society. The main source of carbon dioxide emissions comes from energy production in power plants and from automotive. For this purpose, technologies and methods for carbon dioxide capture and storage are being developed. Our contribution is focused on the absorption of carbon dioxide in spray absorber with various absorption solution atomizers. The first part of our work was to describe the absorption and mass transfer of carbon dioxide to droplets of absorption liquid (water, monoethylamine, etc.). It was also necessary to create a technique for the analysis of carbon dioxide in absorption solutions and flowing gas, which will aid in the assessment of the experimental mass transfer coefficient. For our future experiments, my colleagues from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering developed and constructed a laboratory-scale spray absorber with the possibility of changing atomization nozzle types. Finding the proper ratio between the size of the scrubbing droplets (preferably in the nanoscale range) and the flow velocity of carbon dioxide will be crucial in the laboratory studies. The main outputs of our work will be spray characteristics, absorption efficiency determination and their mutual correlation. A pilot plant device that might be fully operational in a biogas plant, a power plant, or other industries will be built using the knowledge gathered from laboratory studies.
