The ever increasing demands in emission regulation are reflected in the increased maintenance costs for vehicle owners. Potential unexpected faults can arise when car manufacturers tend to omit important gauges from drivers or drivers themselves abuse their vehicles. To keep maintenance costs in check, vehicle owners could benefit from a device that would monitor all of the vital engine parameters and store them for evaluation at a yearly service checkup. This paper aims to design a mobile IoT device, that would be capable of collecting and transmitting vital engine parameters via the Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) to a remote server for later analysis. The proposed device has been tested on multiple vehicles including the 2005 BMW 320d and 2011 Renault Megane. The main advantage of the proposed device is the use of modern LPWA network NB-IoT, in comparison to the solutions already available on the market, which use networks that are destined to be decommissioned in the near future.
