In this present work, the suitability of air assisted impinging jet atomization for Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using Monoethanolamine (MEA) is evaluated. The desired spray characteristics such as droplet size and distribution for CO2 capture by MEA solution is noted from the literature. The suitable operational conditions in terms of gas and liquid injection pressure and Gas-to-liquid ratio (GLR) to achieve the same efficiently is evaluated. The atomizer configuration consisted of two liquid jets inclined at an angle of 90° to each other with a gas jet placed above the impinging point at an angle 45° and in between both the liquid jets. A mixture of glycerol, water and tertiary butanol at the desired composition is used to achieve the similar physical properties of MEA. The spray experiments are performed with this surrogate of MEA at different liquid flow rates and at different GLRs. The droplet size characteristics at 50 mm downstream the impingement point are estimated with the help of Malvern Panalytical’s Spraytec laser diffraction system. The results showed that a fine droplet size of the order of 50 µm with a sparse droplet density required for CO2 capture can be achieved even at low liquid injection pressure conjunction with GLR of around 7 %.
