Post-tensioning method for bridge strengthening has been in use since the 1950s and there are many successful applications throughout the world. It is an efficient and economical solution for a wide range of reinforced concrete bridge types built in the early 20s. In this paper, the method of posttensioning is extended by a structural system of substituted cable ducts, which allows for the significantly widening application of prestressing so it’s suitable for application on beam bridges, slab bridges and through girder bridges (built in years 1905– 1960). The possibility of placing prestressing tendons to substituted cable ducts is a construction method based on additional drilling of cable ducts into the concrete of existing bridges. Academic research at the Brno University of Technology is focused on studying essential details of post-tensioning systems and on the methodology of optimal designing post-tensioning systems for strengthening reinforced concrete bridges.
