The autotrim unit alleviates forces in the mechanical flight control system. The unit itself uses the information about the value and the orientation of the control force in the mechanical installation of the primary flight control system and commands the trim actuator, which in turn operates a trim tab at the control surface's trailing edge. The deflections of the trimtab assists in minimizing the loading and the energy requirements needed to hold the primary control surface at a specified deflection.
