The paper is based on the assumption that metaphors are expression of implicit leadership theories. This relationship has not yet been investigated in depth, although some countrybased studies of the GLOBE project (Chhokar, Brodbeck & House et al. 2007) referred to typical cultural metaphors for leadership. Hoppe and Bhagat (2007) for example, characterized and compared the prototype of an American leader with characteristics of a cultural hero. Beyond this, we found no attempt of systematic analysis of leadership metaphors and its relations to universal or culturally endorsed implicit leadership theories. Moreover, the literature on leadership metaphors, which is mainly influenced by Alvesson and Spicer’s “Metaphors We Lead By” (2011), have treated leadership metaphors as more or less universal expressions.
