Inner structure of big cities, including their residential functions, is differentiated according to the time of the origin of individual parts, distance to city core, physical (mostly relief) conditions and social status of population. The paper focuses on the question whether and to what extent the residential function changed during the last 25 years when relatively massive changes occurred in post-socialist cities. For this purpose, inner urban structures were classified into eight categories. Although the cities under investigation (Brno, Ostrava and Zlín) are quite different in their historical development, geographical location and urban functions, it seems there are two main factors playing the role in the social stratification of individual city parts: age and social status of population.
