Innovation of technological processes at the hardened bearing steel processing is based on the introduction of turning technology. The turning processes of such material require a rigid and precise machine tool and an appropriate cutting tool as well. Results so far show the applicability of new kinds of very hard cutting materials. The paper deals with evaluation of surface layers which occur during machining processes focused on turning operations. Next to the changes of surface roughness there are also some changes that occur in surface layers caused by the deformation process of material removal. During machining the components of tensile or compressive stress are generated underneath the surface. The evaluation of stresses at the layers is made on measuring device that uses the principle of Barkhausen noise. Type of the stress is dependent on cutting conditions of the process. This contribution is trying to find advantages at the use of turning operation instead of grinding.
