From their own satellite to Mars exploration. BUT students are conquering space

International Day of Human Space Flight commemorates the beginning of the space age for humankind and celebrates achievements that have pushed the boundaries of human knowledge. It is observed every year on April 12 in honor of the first crewed spaceflight carried out in 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Today, however, space is no longer the domain of professional astronauts alone, engineers, technicians, and students are playing an increasingly important role in its exploration. And at BUT, this is especially true.

The path to the stars at Brno University of Technology can be explored not only through study programmes focused on aerospace and space technologies, such as Professional Pilot, Aerospace Technology, or Space Applications, but also through student teams – YSpace and Brno Mars Rover – where students push the limits of technology as well as their own abilities.

Your own satellite? At BUT, it's reality

The student team YSpace focuses on the development of small satellites known as CubeSats, which today represent one of the most dynamic areas of space research. These compact satellites make it possible to carry out scientific and technological experiments at lower cost compared to traditional missions, creating opportunities for innovation, testing new technologies, and involving student teams in real space projects.

Members of YSpace participate in the entire process – from the initial concept and design through construction and testing to the preparation of an actual space mission. The team works on projects with real scientific impact, such as the CIMER mission, focused on exploring the potential benefits of desiccation-based hibernation for cultivating biological materials in space, or the KOSTKA mission, the first Czech satellite designed and built entirely by students.

The goal of the team is to gain practical experience in the space industry and build a community united by a shared interest in space. However, it is not only about engineering, students from various fields can get involved, as the team also focuses on outreach, project management, and marketing alongside electronics development and satellite construction.

The team’s success is demonstrated by its participation in the prestigious European Space Agency programme Fly Your Satellite! Design Booster, which provides access to top-level know-how and technologies, as well as the aforementioned KOSTKA, which recently passed final testing and will soon be launched into Earth orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket by SpaceX.

A robot conquering Mars

While YSpace aims for orbit, students from the Brno Mars Rover team focus on the exploration of planetary surfaces. They develop an autonomous robotic rover that simulates real missions to Mars and compete in prestigious international competitions, where they measure their skills against teams from around the world.

Their rover “Freya” must navigate challenging and unknown terrain with obstacles, operate autonomously without GPS, and analyze collected samples, all with a strong emphasis on maximum autonomy. The system also includes a robotic arm for object manipulation and a drilling device capable of collecting samples from depths of up to 30 centimeters. Another unique feature is its integration with a drone, which assists the rover with terrain mapping and target localization.

The team brings together students from across faculties, and already in its first year, it reached the finals of the prestigious European Rover Challenge, representing the Czech Republic among the world’s top teams. In their competition debut, the students achieved an impressive 11th place and gained strong motivation to further improve their rover.

Study and create technologies of the future

The activities of the YSpace and Brno Mars Rover teams clearly show that studying at BUT is not just about theory in textbooks. Already during their studies, students have the opportunity to engage in projects with real impact, contribute to cutting-edge technologies, and collaborate with experts from around the world.

Whether you are interested in satellite development, robotics, programming, or even project management, student teams at Brno University of Technology offer an environment where you can turn your ideas into reality and gain experience that will take you far beyond the classroom!
