BUT in QS Rankings: Record Number of Subjects and Four Positions in Top 200

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published its latest international subject rankings of universities. Brno University of Technology recorded its most significant result since 2021, when it first appeared in this prestigious ranking. Ten evaluated subjects, including four placements in the TOP 200, represent a historic maximum for the university.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is an annual ranking published by a British company that evaluates universities across dozens of subject categories and five broad subject areas.

Main categories

Brno University of Technology is regularly ranked in two of the five broad subject areas: Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences. Other main categories, namely Life Sciences & Medicine, Social Sciences & Management, and Arts & Humanities, fall outside the university’s primary focus. Therefore, the university is not ranked in these areas, although as a technical university it still produces partial outputs in them, for example in Architecture.

In the Engineering & Technology category, the university rose to 228th place
, which is its best-ever result in this category and an improvement of 54 places compared to last year. In Natural Sciences, however, BUT slightly declined, returning to the 451–500 band from the year before last (401–450 last year).

Subject categories

BUT was ranked for the first time in Chemical Engineering, increasing the total number of evaluated subjects from nine to ten.

A strong group of four subjects has newly emerged, in which BUT achieved TOP 200 placements for the first time in its history, in all cases ranked 151–200. Alongside traditionally strong fields such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, Civil Engineering joined the group after its ranking debut last year.

TOP 300 positions were achieved by BUT in three cases. In Electrical & Electronic Engineering, it defended last year’s 201–250 position. The same ranking was achieved upon its first evaluation in Chemical Engineering, and an improvement of fifty places resulted in a 251–300 position in Chemistry.

TOP 500 positions were maintained by the university in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Environmental Sciences.

“Subject rankings allow us to compare the quality of disciplines down to the level of individual faculties that develop these fields of study and research. They provide us with international benchmarking and enable us to assess the competitiveness of our disciplines in a broader global context,” said Ladislav Janíček, Rector of BUT, adding: “This year’s historically best result in the ranking shows that BUT is strengthening its position among the world’s leading universities. Four subjects placed in the top 200 and an overall improvement of more than fifty positions in Engineering & Technology represent an excellent result, for which I thank our academic and research staff as well as everyone who contributed to these achievements. It is a shared success we can rightfully be proud of.”

About the ranking

QS World University Rankings by Subject has been published since 2013, and BUT has been included since 2021. Before this year’s edition, more than 6,000 higher education institutions worldwide were analyzed. Of these, 1,912 institutions (164 more than last year) from 166 countries were included in the final ranking.

The evaluation is based on a combination of Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, and Citation Per Paper, and in some subjects also includes the H-Index and International Research Network. The weight of individual indicators varies by subject. To be included in a given subject ranking, a university must meet threshold values for the number of publications and receive a sufficient number of nominations in reputation surveys.
