Podcast Technicky vzato: Will Supercomputers Perform Surgery Instead of Doctors?

How are modern technologies changing our world? Scientists, students, and graduates from Brno University of Technology talk simply and clearly about topics that increasingly shape our lives – yet we often don’t fully understand them. Listen to a new episode of Technicky vzato – this time with Jiří Jaroš on supercomputers.

The guest on the podcast Technicky vzato is Jiří Jaroš from FIT BUT. | Author: Václav Koníček

Not long ago, some scientific problems were practically unsolvable because the necessary computing power simply didn’t exist. Today, supercomputers are changing that. They can simulate the universe, predict the weather, or help doctors plan surgeries. Supercomputers make it possible to create detailed models of the human body and design procedures tailored to individual patients. The result is personalized treatment that is more precise, faster, gentler for patients, and more efficient for doctors.

“We provide doctors with a simple interface where they can test how an ultrasound procedure would work. Of course, if you give a supercomputer incorrect input and data, it will compute exactly that. That’s why we have two phases. I’ve talked about the planning phase, but it is followed by a second phase, when the patient returns for the procedure and it is once again guided by a computer that monitors and adjusts the course of the operation. The patient comes in, the device is positioned as calculated by the supercomputer, and a few quick measurements are performed. Only after the doctor confirms that we are targeting the right spot does the procedure take place,” explains supercomputing expert Jiří Jaroš from the Faculty of Information Technology at BUT.

How do supercomputers work? Can they mislead doctors? How does artificial intelligence come into play? And could the fictional “central brain of humanity” one day become reality?
