High school students ran the engineering stairs at FME BUT for the first time

The twenty-first year of the Mechanical Engineering Stairs Race at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Brno University of Technology did not break any records, but it did bring one novelty – for the first time, high school relay teams took part in the event. On November 12, a total of 111 runners and 54 relay teams of all categories lined up at the start. The race has been held at FME since the year 2000 and was traditionally organized by the Student Chamber of the Academic Senate of FME together with volunteers.

This year, the race was opened by the Rectorate relay team, followed by the FME leadership relay as the second team. The morning belonged to individual competitors, while in the afternoon 52 four-member relay teams took turns on the stairs in the categories Students and VIP, and newly also in the category High School Students. Five teams from four different high schools arrived to participate.

An interesting part of this year's event was an ongoing research project led by colleagues from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (FEEC), who together with biomedical and sports technology students used racing volunteers for measurements. Specifically, they measured ECG, movement signals and muscle oxygen saturation. Thanks to this, participating runners will receive not only prizes and the satisfaction of finishing the race, but also valuable performance feedback.

In the afternoon, the fastest athletes from each category received a sweet reward in the form of a medal, applause, and prizes. In the categories Student Men and Student Women, the winners defended last year’s gold once again – Nela Hrdličková and Lukáš Preisler. The winning relay teams Stará garda and Young guns also maintained their positions. Among alumni men, the fastest was Adam Kopec, and among high school teams, the best performance was delivered by BROSCHMANI from Blansko.

Along with the race, after a one-year break, the event “Engineers to the Core” also took place. A total of 35 new volunteers registered in the Czech Registry of Bone Marrow Donors. The race itself also has a charitable dimension – this year, the registration fee totaling 24,160 CZK will be used to purchase toys for young patients at the University Hospital Brno.

Congratulations to the winners and to all participants who pushed their limits and gave their maximum! We thank the Student Chamber of the Academic Senate FME for outstanding organization and all sponsors for supporting the event.
