Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

To obtain the course credit, students are required to successfully complete the following assignments:

Seminar Paper
Students are required to prepare a seminar paper based on a selected project. The seminar paper focuses on the practical application of selected project management principles, methods and tools covered in the course.

Position Paper and Presentation
Students are required to prepare a position paper on a selected current topic in project management and present it during class. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the selected topic and their ability to discuss and support their position.

Both assignments must be successfully completed to obtain the course credit.

EXAM REQUIREMENTS

The final exam is written and consists of open-ended questions. The questions focus on students’ knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles, methods and tools of project management and their ability to explain and apply the topics covered in the course.

Aims

The course aims to introduce students the methodology of IPMA, current trends in project management and teach students how to manage projects.
Students will gain skills in project management and leading the project teams after passing this subject.

Syllabus

The course introduces students to the fundamental principles, methods and tools of project management and their practical application. It is based on internationally recognised approaches, including PRINCE2, PMI and IPMA, and reflects current trends in project management. Attention is paid to the project life cycle, project planning and management, risk management, the role of the project manager, teamwork, motivation and communication. The knowledge and skills acquired can be applied to project preparation, implementation and evaluation, as well as in managerial practice.

  1. Introduction to Project Management – the importance and application of project management, basic principles and approaches to managing projects. Basic Project Management Concepts – the project and its characteristics, project versus routine operations, the project management triple constraint, defining a project using its basic attributes, project management certifications.
  2. Strategy  – project objectives, benefits, strategic alignment.
  3. Project Life Cycle and Pre-Project Phase – phases of the project life cycle, identification of project opportunities, opportunity study and feasibility study.
  4. Project Risk Management – risk analysis, development of risk response measures, and risk management throughout the project.
  5. Project Initiation and Planning – project initiation, project scope definition, basic planning procedures and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
  6. Project Time and Cost Planning – project time analysis, planning of activities and deadlines, preparation and management of the project budget.
  7. Project Manager – the role of the project manager, personal qualities, skills, competencies, responsibilities and position within the project.
  8. Project Team and Teamwork – characteristics of project teams, team roles, stages of project team development and principles of effective teamwork.
  9. Managing International and Dynamic Projects – international and virtual teams, cultural differences, start-ups.
  10. Creativity and Motivation in Projects – the importance of creativity in solving project problems, creative approaches and techniques, principles of motivating project team members.
  11. Communication and Feedback in Projects – principles of project communication, communication processes, information management, and giving and receiving feedback.
  12. Project Closure and Post-Project Phase – project closure process, evaluation of project results, lessons learned and evaluation of project benefits.
  13. Current Trends in Project Management – Agile approaches to project management and their application, Scrum, projects, programmes and portfolios.
