Textile workshop

The course is designed as a series of lectures and follow-up practical exercises focused on creating with textile material. Each lecture will thematize the relationship between art and working with textiles. The emphasis is on individual selection of theoretical knowledge and practical activities. Within each class, students will learn about working on industrial, domestic and embroidery machines. The course will include the opportunity to work in a graphic and screen printing workshop to enhance possibilities in printing and patterning. A portion of the class will be devoted to current trends and artists working with textiles. Reflection on a broader understanding of working with textiles in the visual arts and the search for individual expression in the artist's work will be important.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completion of the course should help students to orient themselves in the field of textile design. In the environment of contemporary art theory and practice with references to contemporary fine art. The course will deepen the ability to think interdisciplinarily, reflecting for inspiration in their own work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures presenting theoretical aspects and selected examples of textile creation, analysis of works. Practical examples and practical exercises.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The following conditions are set for the award of credit:
1. students submit the results of practical continuous tasks assigned during the semester. Each assignment will be discussed with the instructor;
2. attendance in class (2 allowed unexcused absences) or submission of a make-up assignment.

1. Introduction to contemporary textile art – terminology and technology
2. Working with sewing machines, hand sewing and embroidery, pattern making
3. Machine sewing practical tasks
4. Textile image/collage/clothing practical exercises

8. Basic Clothing Construction, working with the cut

Aims

The aim of the Textile Workshop course is to offer students a basic orientation in the key concepts, and practical exercises of working with textile materials. It will offer and understanding as to why some textile works are seen as art and some only as craft and what other criteria can be used to label a work as art. Practical exercises will focus on technological practices related to traditional textile techniques, sustainability, recycling, upcycling in textile artwork. In the course students will learn about the structure of materials, its dyeing, and printing, both chemical and natural based. The course will enhance students' ability to think about textiles in their creative work. Emphasis will be placed on proper technological processes in textile and apparel creation.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The classes take place in the silk-screen and newly emerging textile workshop of the BUT Faculty of Arts in the hours determined by the schedule. Minimum participation is 85%. Making up for missed lessons takes place after agreement with the teacher in the form of individual consultations.
