Professional English I

Practice in reading for information and understanding the argumentation at B2 level of the CEF which requires a student to be able to find out information, thoughts and opinions in highly professional resources within his/her field of study.
PowerPoint presentation practice within the given technical topic.
First 7 topics are common for all the fields of study while the other 5 topics vary according to the respective field of study.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will understand the specificities of the English professional style, general civil engineering terminology and grammar used in civil engineering articles. Students will be able to use the terminology of their particular field of study (structural engineering, transportation engineering, building construction, material engineering, water structures, geodesy and land surveying, economics and construction management). Students will improve their understanding of civil engineering texts and will be able to create a short presentation on a civil engineering topic and present it in front their colleagues.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of general English at B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Reading civil engineering text. Development of communication and listening skills using interactive audio-visual technologies, LMS Moodle and Smartboard.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

In order to receive their credits, students need to attend classes regularly. They are required to prepare and give a presentation on a chosen civil engineering topic.
