On the project
Description in EnglishThe project will address gas sensing using graphene sensors. These do not require surface functionalisation or the production of a number of technological variants, each tuned to a specific chemicals. It has been measured that changes in active layer resistance and noise production are not always correlated and can be used as independent parameters. Graphene sensors exposed to gas vapor exhibit pronounced maxima in the low-frequency noise spectra with different features, while other sensors based on thin-films introduce only a change in resistance without a change in the noise spectra. An approach where the sensor channel is purposefully moderated and optimized with respect to detection sensitivity, selectivity and response dynamics will be investigated. Different number of graphene layers, SiO2 and HfO2 as gate dielectric and different active area of the sensor will be studied. Samples optimized in this way have mobility comparable to reference monoatomic layers and also produce lower noise levels, thus providing excellent detection sensitivity in addition to chemical selectivity.
