When technology, ideas, and creativity meet. BUT heads to Maker Faire

Brno will come alive with creativity and innovation – and Brno University of Technology will be there! The next edition of the popular Maker Faire festival will take place on the weekend of October 18–19 at the Brno Exhibition Centre. Enthusiasts of DIY, modern inventions, and creative making will meet to discover makers and their projects.

Maker Faire is coming, and BUT will be there! | Author: Jitka Janů

The Maker Faire festival is one of the largest showcases of creativity, technology, and innovation in the Czech Republic. Visitors can look forward to interactive demonstrations, experiments, and student projects. “We want to show that technology can be playful, inspiring, and accessible to everyone. Maker Faire is a great opportunity to present the work of students and experts from Brno University of Technology to the public and to motivate young people toward technical education,” said BUT event coordinator Lenka Svobodová, adding that Brno University of Technology will present nineteen innovative and original projects at the festival.

Experts from BUT will explain that 3D printing is not just about pressing the “print” button but also about engineering thinking. Visitors can see 3D printers in action and test their knowledge in a quiz competition. They can also try assembling a mechanical button made entirely from 3D-printed parts. And in the three-dimensional world, there will also be a 3D scanner — a positioning device that photographs objects from all sides and angles.

If you enjoy games, don’t miss the educational chessboard, which suggests the best possible moves to players, or the electronic dice that can recognize which side it landed on and send the result to a mobile app using built-in sensors.

Robot enthusiasts will surely enjoy meeting the humanoid robot InMoov, which can blink, move its eyes, smile, or even shake hands with visitors, and its smaller colleague, the robot SpongeBob, which children can control and make dance. The BUT exhibit will also include a computer-controlled robotic manipulator with an arm reach of up to one meter, and robo-paintings that work on the principle of halftoning.

A 3D-printed beehive will allow visitors to explore the mechanism of automated honey collection and test the control interface of these functions. In the Zen duel, visitors can compete to see who can stay calmer and maintain a lower heart rate.

University student teams are also heading to Maker Faire. From the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communications, Brno Mars Rover will showcase its robotic Mars exploration vehicles, YSpace will present the world of space engineering, and the Drone Research Center will demonstrate creative drone technologies. Visitors can learn how drones are built, what equipment they can carry, and even try flying them using a simulator.

From the mechanical engineering side, the student team Pneuracer will present an upgraded model of a compressed-air-powered car, Chicken Wings will showcase remote-controlled airplanes, and TU Brno Racing will display the latest model of their electric Formula Student car, the Dragon e5. Visitors can also take part in interactive activities to assemble some parts and experience what it’s like to work on a racing monopost.

Mechatronics and design will be represented by the MechLab laboratory, the student team Lizard Engineers, and experts from the creative workshop StrojLAB, which offers modern equipment for 3D printing, laser cutting, prototyping, and other digital manufacturing technologies. Experts from MechLab and StrojLAB have also prepared special workshops in the workshop zone, focused on DC motor control and generative design and 3D printing modeling.

The festival will also feature an exhibition of bachelor’s projects titled Husovice 2030+, created by students from the Faculty of Architecture at BUT. The exhibition presents proposals for improving the Brno district of Husovice, focusing on better microclimatic and social conditions and promoting quality housing development.

Creative technologies for the whole family

All projects, including the accompanying program, can be found from 10:00 a.m. in the BUT exhibition area located in Pavilion A1 at the Brno Exhibition Centre. The event is open to families with children as well as the general public. More details about the program are available on the festival website.

Maker Faire 2024. | Author: Jitka Janů

Maker Faire is an international festival celebrating the world of makers — people who love to create, invent, and share their ideas. It takes place every year in Prague, Brno, and other Czech cities, bringing together enthusiasts, digital DIYers, and experts to share inventions and inspire one another. The festival, which is part of Creative Days, aims to popularize technology and creative making.

And what did last year’s Maker Faire in Brno look like?
