In September, science will move Brno! Brno University of Technology is once again joining the Science and Technology Festival, which will take place on the weekend of September 5–7 at the Brno Exhibition Centre. Meet scientific giants and innovations born thanks to their discoveries. Look forward to robots, slime making, chemical experiments, and a space panel exhibition. Science and Technology Festival 2024. | Author: Václav Koníček The popular science festival organized by the Brno Observatory and Planetarium wants to show that science is not just about theory but is often very practical, useful, and above all fun. This idea is also supported by the Brno University of Technology, which will present mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, and even space technologies at the Science and Technology Festival. “Scientists and researchers from BUT are preparing dozens of activities, experiments, and interactive demonstrations for visitors. The aim is to bring the beauty of science and discovery closer to both children and adults,” explained the festival coordinator for BUT, Lenka Svobodová. At the Faculty of Chemistry booth, visitors will learn which chemical experiments they can safely try at home, or discover how science protects the food we eat. They will make slime, a lava lamp, or a colorful pH indicator, and also enjoy the legendary Chemistry Show full of effects, fire, colors, and explosions. Interested visitors can also mix a refreshing bubble lemonade with fruit pearls they make themselves. Experts from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication have prepared a program full of interactive exhibits, from blinking cubes and a laser maze to a brightness analyzer, a flight simulator, and 3D printing of toys. Tech enthusiasts can also try programming with Microbit Arcade in the gaming lab. Science and Technology Festival 2024. | Author: Václav Koníček Students from the Yspace team will dive into space technologies with you, and team leader Dominik Klement will reveal how students send technologies into space during a moderated discussion, which will take place on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Brno City Hall booth. Other space technologies developed at BUT will be presented in a panel exhibition. The Faculty of Information Technology will demonstrate how deepfake technology works. Visitors can test how easy it is to fool an image, play blackjack with a robot, assemble a mechanical button, and learn how to play chess using an educational chessboard. Science and Technology Festival 2024. | Author: Václav Koníček Do you enjoy the game of towers? Then don’t miss the Faculty of Civil Engineering booth, where you can test your builder skills in a fun game of Maxi Jenga. In addition, you will see how unique devices are used to create 3D models of surrounding spaces – a Leica drone with LiDAR collects spatial data from above, a handheld scanner is ideal for quickly mapping the surroundings, and a Matterport PRO 3 scanner captures 3D points and 360° photos to create virtual tours. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will present key areas of mechanical engineering and showcase student and creative teams. Visitors can see student's work from strojLAB or meet robots from the MechLab, each demonstrating a different part of mechatronics. The Pneuracer team will showcase models of remote-controlled cars powered by compressed air. And students from TU Brno Racing will unveil their latest electric Formula monopost, which they designed, built, and will race in prestigious Formula Student competitions. Science and Technology Festival 2024. | Author: Václav Koníček Aviation enthusiasts should not miss the Chicken Wings booth, a student team designing competition aircraft models. Visitors can dive into aviation technologies and also assemble their own wooden airplane. And if you want to become an inventor for a while, stop by Lizard Engineers. In their interactive workshop, you can build a working electric circuit that lights up an LED diode with just the touch of your hand. Science and Technology Festival 2024. | Author: Václav Koníček
The Science and Technology Festival will offer a rich program involving more than a hundred scientific and technical institutions, educational organizations, academic workplaces, universities, and private companies. Get drawn into the fascinating world of science, technology, and history – every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. “The festival is for anyone who wants to try physical and chemical processes firsthand and longs to understand how science works. People can also discover these and other innovations from BUT at the Night of Scientists or the autumn events Maker Faire and Pop Science,” added Svobodová. And what did BUT’s exhibition at the Science and Technology Festival look like last year? The detailed program of the Science and Technology Festival is available on the festival website.
