Women Who Inspire: Stories of Female Students, Researchers, and Professionals at BUT

Behind every innovation or scientific breakthrough are people searching for new solutions and pushing the boundaries of knowledge. On the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day, we are highlighting the stories of female students, researchers and professionals associated with Brno University of Technology who contribute to the development of new technologies, achieve remarkable research successes and inspire future generations.


To mark the occasion, we have selected several articles from recent months that showcase inspiring individuals as well as projects supporting greater participation of girls and women in technology – from new discoveries and cutting-edge research to achievements in prestigious competitions.

From Uncertain Beginnings in Chemistry to a Prestigious Award: Young BUT Researcher Receives Czech Head Prize for Research on Unusual DNA Forms

She focuses on bioinformatics, studies specific forms of DNA and recently received the prestigious Czech Head scientific award. Michaela Dobrovolná, a PhD student at the Faculty of Chemistry at BUT and the Institute of Biophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, researches non-canonical forms of DNA, particularly so-called G-quadruplexes. An optimist passionate about technology – that is how Kateřina Mačišáková describes herself. A graduate of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication at BUT, she is one of the main faces of this year's admissions campaign. Her message to secondary school students is simple – do not be afraid of university studies. When she thinks of BUT, she remembers friendship, adventure and some of the best years of her life. Formula Student Gives Meaning to My Studies, Says New TU Brno Racing Team Leader Anna Piarová

As the faculty comes back to life after the summer break, student teams welcome new members, plan the upcoming season and, in some cases, appoint new leaders. Formula Student team TU Brno Racing is one such example. We spoke with former team leader Jan Kozelek and the new team leader Anna Piarová about the past season and plans for the future. The Microscope of the Future: Combining Light and Electrons Wins Prestigious Grant

Since the beginning of this year, the Central European Institute of Technology has been working on LightEM, a project focused on developing a light-based electron microscope. The principal investigator is Andrea Konečná from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and CEITEC BUT, who secured support through the prestigious ERC CZ programme. Over the next five years, her team aims to develop and test a light-based electron microscope that would allow scientists to adaptively modulate the electron beam during experiments and observe processes in real time – capabilities beyond those of conventional electron microscopes. We Need Women in Science, Says Forbes-Awarded Researcher Michaela Vojníková

She has received a Fulbright Scholarship, won the Falling Walls Lab competition, earned the Brno Ph.D. Talent award and was included in Forbes Slovakia's 30 Under 30 list. Michaela Vojníková is among the successful researchers connected with Brno University of Technology. She has dedicated her scientific career to the search for new cancer treatments and spends her free time popularising science on social media. Read more.

A Bachelor's Thesis That Is Changing a City: FAST BUT Student's Intersection Design Reaches the Mayor's Office

The bachelor's thesis of a student from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT attracted the attention of experts and the media alike. Alexandra Hulvejová received the Dean's Award for her detailed proposal to redesign a high-risk intersection in Levice, Slovakia. Her proposal, based on a turbo roundabout solution, is now heading for further discussions with the city's mayor. The project also included extensive traffic analyses and visualisations. Forbes Includes Jana Musilová of BUT Among the Top Women in Science 2025 in the Czech Republic

This year, Forbes ranked Jana Musilová from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication among the Top Women in Science 2025. The prestigious list highlights twenty-five inspiring and active researchers across a broad range of disciplines, from mathematics, physics, chemistry and robotics to biology, medicine, history and psychology. The Best Thing You Can Do in IT Is Keep Learning

Today, she works as a machine learning engineer, connecting AI development teams across the globe. Yet at the beginning of her studies, Faculty of Information Technology graduate Kateřina Vrána doubted whether IT was the right path for her. “I am proud that I overcame my initial fears and reached where I am today.
