For nearly thirty years, the Czech company Siemens has been recognizing talented students, inspiring teachers, and dedicated scientists. This year, the laureates once again include a representative of Brno University of Technology – Tomáš Fryšták from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication. Other representatives of the Brno University of Technology also made it into the top ten in their categories in strong competition. The ceremonial presentation of the prestigious Werner von Siemens Awards for 2025 took place on Wednesday, March 11, in Prague.The other winners of the Werner von Siemens Award have been announced. | Author: SiemensThe 28th edition of the Werner von Siemens Awards presented prizes in the categories Best Basic Research Result, Best Master’s Thesis, Best Doctoral Thesis, and Best Teacher. Along with the students, supervisors and advisors of the awarded theses also received recognition. Special jury awards were also granted to projects distinguished by the quality of women’s scientific work and to graduate theses focusing on topics such as Industry 4.0 or smart infrastructure and energy.In the TOP 10 Master’s theses, students and now graduates of BUT secured three places. 4th place was taken by Daniel Němeček from FME (supervisor David Nečas), 5th place by Miroslav Kvaššay also from FME (supervisor Zdeněk Hadaš), and 10th place by Valentina Hrtoňová from FEEC (supervisor Marina Filipenská).The top award for the best Master’s thesis in the category focused on smart infrastructure and energy goes to BUT. It was awarded to Tomáš Fryšták from FEEC for his thesis entitled Analysis of the Operation of Converter Traction Power Supply Systems 25 kV / 50 Hz in Ancillary Services Mode.The thesis focuses on the possibility of using traction power supply stations not only to supply electricity to trains, but also to support the electrical grid. Thanks to an active converter, the station can draw electricity while also returning it to the grid when needed. This helps maintain proper voltage levels and improve the quality of supplied electrical energy. “In the long term, this model could also contribute to better integration of traction systems into the concept of smart grids and to the sustainable development of railway transport in the Czech Republic and across Europe,” explains Fryšták, who is also a master’s student in the Expert Engineering in Transport programme at the Institute of Forensic Engineering of BUT.Tomáš Fryšták from FEEC. | Author: SiemensIn the category Smart Infrastructure and Energy, the TOP 5 Master’s theses also included Jan Bureš from FEEC in 3rd place (supervisor Jan Klusáček), Jakub Moravec from FME in 4th place (supervisor Zdeněk Hadaš), and Miroslav Kvaššay from FME in 5th place (supervisor Zdeněk Hadaš). In the TOP 5 doctoral theses in this category, Matěj Vrtal from FEEC (supervisor Petr Toman) achieved 2nd place.In another category, Industry 4.0, David Chocholatý from FIT (supervisor Radek Hranický) placed 3rd in the TOP 5 Master’s theses, and in the TOP 5 doctoral theses on this topic, Jiří Novák from FIT (supervisor Peter Chudý) took 5th place.All these results confirm the high quality of student and scientific work produced at Brno University of Technology and their ability to succeed in nationwide competition.“I would like to congratulate all students – now graduates – who made it among the awarded participants in such strong competition. Great recognition also belongs to everyone else who found the courage to submit their work to the competition. The essence of development lies in competition, and contests are one of its key driving forces. Participation in this and other competitions demonstrates healthy self-confidence, and competitiveness is something we actively encourage among our students. Together with the other chairs and members of the Werner von Siemens Awards juries, we agreed that there were no weak submissions, which made determining the final ranking all the more challenging. I am therefore very proud of all the awarded, ranked, and participating representatives of BUT and thank them for representing the university,” said BUT Rector Ladislav Janíček, who chaired one of the juries. He added that all submitted works demonstrate the high quality of technical and scientific education in the Czech Republic.The Werner von Siemens Award has been supporting talented students, scientists, and teachers for 28 years and ranks among the most significant independent initiatives of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its aim is not only to motivate young talents to pursue scientific work but also to highlight the crucial role of teachers and strengthen the relationship between the public and science. The awards are decided by independent committees composed of leading academics and experts, which throughout the history of the competition have distributed more than CZK 18 million in prizes among 512 awardees.Related articles:
