The three-day ClimaExpo Workshop was held as an intensive architectural marathon focused on creating a conceptual design for an outdoor laboratory. The aim was to design a permanent public exhibition dealing comprehensively with the water cycle and climate change. The winning proposal is expected to be brought to life by the end of 2028, with the winning team gaining the opportunity to provide architectural supervision during its implementation.
The workshop began with the first day dedicated to conceptual design, launched with a series of lectures.
The morning programme included presentations by:
Daniel Marton, who introduced the Interreg ATCZ107 KlimAdapt-Thaya/Dyje project and its work packages.
Marlene Haimann from BOKU University in Vienna, who presented the topic of the Public Lab.
Marek Viskot from Povodí Moravy, s.p., who spoke about sediment measurement in reservoirs.
This was followed by a guided tour of the future outdoor laboratory site, where specific research exhibits that will become part of the permanent exhibition were introduced. These included a river channel model (Stanislav Paseka), above-ground vertical filters (Michal Kriška Dunajský), rainfall and surface runoff simulation (Veronika Sobotková), blue-green infrastructure (Ondřej Zedník), and a demonstration of drip and sprinkler irrigation (Eva Hyánková).
In the afternoon, the teams moved to the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology, where Nicol Galeová gave a lecture on the basics of exhibition design and the creation of outdoor exhibits, including examples such as the VIDA! Outdoor Exhibition or Where the River Runs in Beijing.
Studio work at ARC FAST began around half past four. The teams were led by architect-mentors Viktor Svojanovský and Bohumila Hybská, while Jiljí Šindlar’s team worked independently. After half past five, the teams consulted the technical solutions of the exhibits with Michal Kriška Dunajský and Veronika Sobotková.
The second day was marked by lively and constructive debates about the designs and a return visit to the future laboratory site, helping the participants to better understand the scale and atmosphere of the location. The teams incorporated feedback from Nicol Galeová and spent the afternoon working intensively on physical models in the studio.
The big finale took place on the third day. The teams presented their conceptual designs for the permanent outdoor exhibition to a professional jury composed of Juraj Dulenčín, Josef Chybík, Václav Navrátil, David Veselý, and Daniel Marton.
After demanding work and much anticipation, the following results were announced:
First place – Team led by Bohumila Hybská: Veronika Mikulová (FA), Alžběta Harzeková (FA), and Tereza Šťerbová (FAST)
Second place – Team led by Jiljí Šindlar: Tereza Ticháčková and Sarah Křištofová (both students of FA BUT)
Third place – Team led by Viktor Svojanovský: Lucia Murínová (FA), along with Štěpánka Vaňková (FAST) and Monika Šrůtková (FAST)
Congratulations to all the winners!
As a reward for their effort and creativity, all participants will receive a cruise on the Baťa Canal, sponsored by Povodí Moravy, s.p. The workshop was supported by the ATCZ00107 KlimAdapt-Thaya/Dyje project, Povodí Moravy, s.p., and the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology. Physical models created during the workshop will be displayed on the 4th floor of Building Z.
