Study aims

The curriculum of our programme is designed to prepare the student for their further career in the field of engineering and other related areas. The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge in various fields of engineering and developing the ability to work and make decisions autonomously. Although the curriculum focuses on theoretical knowledge of engineering disciplines, we also concentrate on developing creativity and critical thinking through project based learning.

Graduate profile

The graduate will gain broad theoretical and practical knowledge of various engineering disciplines. Thanks to the curriculum, they will understand the overlap between individual areas, and will be able to solve complex engineering problems, while being able to consider several different aspects of design, processes, or management.
The graduate will exhibit well-developed skills in critical thinking and therefore will be able to select scientific methods that will help him/her to solve practical problems. Our graduate should be able to work on a task autonomously (studying a specific issue in detail) or within a team; they should be able to engage in a professional dialogue.
The graduate should become competent in critical thinking and should be able to use appropriate engineering approaches suitable for a given project. Thanks to these projects, which include real outputs, they should be able to consider the economic and ecological aspects of the proposed solution.
Our graduate will be able to present the results of their scientific work in front of an audience as well as in writing, and thanks to working on the engineering projects, they will become proficient in interpersonal competences and soft skills.

Profession characteristics

Thanks to the project-based learning and the nature of learning, graduates can demonstrate strong adaptability skills, which increase their chances of getting a job in many sectors of industry and commerce. In fact, many graduates of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering work in chief executive positions of design and computer departments of companies in several fields, or in small computer and software companies, but also in departments of big international companies.

Fulfilment criteria

See applicable regulations, DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).
The final state examination consists of a defence of the bachelor thesis and a discussion of the thesis topics. Both parts of the state final exam are held on the same date before the Commission for State Examinations. The state examination may be taken by a student who obtained the required credits in prescribed composition and submitted Bachelor’s thesis within a set deadline. The contents and structure of the final state examination shall be determined by the programme. The rules for organisation and course of the final state examinations are determined by internal standards of BUT and FME. The discussion consists of three thematic areas: - Engineering mechanics and computer modelling of mechanical stress of structures (FEM). - Thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. - Construction of machines and materials

Study plan creation

The rules and conditions of study programmes are determined by:
BUT STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES,
BUT STUDY PROGRAMME STANDARDS,
STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES of Brno University of Technology (USING "ECTS"),
DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).

Availability for the disabled

Brno University of Technology acknowledges the need for equal access to higher education. There is no direct or indirect discrimination during the admission procedure or the study period. Students with specific educational needs (learning disabilities, physical and sensory handicap, chronic somatic diseases, autism spectrum disorders, impaired communication abilities, mental illness) can find help and counselling at Lifelong Learning Institute of Brno University of Technology. This issue is dealt with in detail in Rector's Guideline No. 11/2017 "Applicants and Students with Specific Needs at BUT". Furthermore, in Rector's Guideline No 71/2017 "Accommodation and Social Scholarship“ students can find information on a system of social scholarships.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The Master's study programme Mechanical Engineering is based on Bachelor's study programmes Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering in English and Czech language offered at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
A graduate of the follow-up Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering can continue to study the doctoral study programme Design and Process Engineering or any other similarly focused doctoral study programme.
