Study aims

The study programme provides interdisciplinary studies for MSc degree in audio engineering. The programme focuses on the education of professionals in artistic, operational and technical professions with knowledge of theoretical concepts, methods and technologies in the field of acoustics, sound and multimedia technologies and audio production. Teaching is focused on the theoretical fundamentals of the field, such as mathematics, physical acoustics, electroacoustic, signal processing, informatics and instrumentation, applied audio engineering, such as acoustics, audio and multimedia technology and audio recording, and practical skills in the audio recording practice.

Graduate profile

The graduate will possess detailed knowledge in the field of acoustics, electroacoustics, audio signal processing, multimedia, spatial sound and modern audio technologies and knowledge of and its utilization in the studio practice, multimedia installations, etc. The area of the knowledge extends from the range of sound waves and audio signals through their analogue and digital processing, compression and transmission to design and realization of audio systems, from musical theory through recording practice to sound and multimedia installations. He is familiar with the principle of room acoustics and sound reinforcement using modern sound systems. Thanks to the good theoretical foundations coupled with sufficiently universal education in applications-oriented studies he can be expected to accommodate to all concrete requirements of his future professional practice also in other related areas.

Profession characteristics

Graduates in this branch of MSc studies will find application in operation of broadcasting, television, post-production and recording studios, theatres, in the staging musical and multimedia production, in research and development in area of audio signal processing, audio hardware and software, in companies engaged in the design, production and service of audio electronics, in companies engaged in the design and realization of studios and space for audio production, with soun system design and complex installation of AV technology. In addition to their technical knowledge of problems, they will be prepared to perform higher executive and managerial functions. Their sufficient theoretical education provides the required basis for possible enlargement of their knowledge in doctoral studies.

Study plan creation

Courses are evaluated according to ECTS credits. The credit expresses an approximate weekly student's workload for the course. Credits for a given course are obtained after the prescribed completion, i.e. after awarding a credit, classified credit, or by passing an exam under the conditions of the BUT Rules of Study and Examination, the internal standard of the Rules for Organization of Studies at FEEC and the composition and content individually defined in each course.
In a two-year master study, the student must earn at least 120 credits in the specified credit composition.
For Acoustics and Audiovisual Technology specialization:
45 credits in compulsory courses,
20 credits for elaboration, submission and successful defense of master thesis,
minimum of 49 credits in specified groups of compulsory elective (PV) courses,
at least 6 credits in elective courses,
For Audio Production specialization:
56 credits in compulsory courses,
20 credits for elaboration, submission and successful defense of master thesis,
minimum of 35 credits in specified groups of compulsory elective (PV) courses,
at least 6 credits in elective courses.
Obligatory courses are usually completed by the student in semesters and years as stated in the curriculum. If a student fails to complete a compulsory course in the prescribed manner, he / she must register it again in the following year of his / her studies.
Compulsory elective courses of profiling fundamentals (PVA) are field-oriented professional courses that profile the student into narrower areas of his / her interests.
Other compulsory (PVB) courses are other professional courses included in the offers of the departments of FEEC BUT. Their goal is to extend students' professional knowledge.
The student chooses to select PV courses in individual semesters so that at the end of his / her bachelor's degree he / she has at least the prescribed minimum of credits in each group of PV courses, while not obtaining the minimum number of credits in one group of PV courses cannot be compensated by exceeding the number of credits obtained in another group of PV courses.
Elective courses extend the general knowledge of students. Courses are chosen by the student himself or herself from a full-faculty offer (FEEC departments) or from the other faculties of VUT (so-called free courses) and can pass them in any year or semester of master study. Elective courses include Physical Education. If a student has not successfully completed an elective course, he / she may or may not write another academic year in the next academic year.

The representation of the fields of Education of Electrical Engineering and Art was determined on the basis of the ratio of credits for the subjects of the profiling base corresponding to the basic thematic areas of the state examination.

Availability for the disabled

All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.
