Study aims

The aim of the new Micro Degree programme "Selected Competencies for Environmental Engineering" is to provide technical education to support the green transition of industry. The programme is aimed at deepening professional competencies in the field of environmental engineering derived from the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and related regulations and directives of the European Parliament and Council (EU), such as Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and other related directives and regulations. The CSRD significantly expands the number of companies that will have to provide sustainability information and introduces more detailed reporting requirements on the company's environmental, human rights, social and sustainability-related impacts and risks – so-called ESG reporting. The aim of the programme is to develop skills for this kind of reporting in the industrial and energy sectors.

Graduate profile

The graduate of Module 1 can: use knowledge and skills to successfully conduct ESG reporting in an industrial environment; use knowledge and skills to present the results of the LCA method; communicate with an LCA specialist to define the assignment for a more extensive study; use knowledge and skills for inventorying and balancing input data, including the use of existing databases; formulate proposals for measures to improve the environmental parameters of industrial operations.
The graduate of Module 2 can: analyse and evaluate the environmental and social impacts of activities carried out by construction companies and producers of building materials; interpret the results of LCA studies of buildings/products prepared according to standards ČSN EN 15978, 15804, and related norms, for the purpose of proposing measures to reduce environmental impacts across various categories; design strategies to improve the sustainability of processes or products in the building sector; use knowledge and skills to successfully conduct ESG reporting in the building industry.
The graduate of Module 3 can: set up internal processes for collecting and processing data to conduct ESG reporting in manufacturing companies; formulate and evaluate specific measures within a company's sustainability strategy; communicate with specialists in life cycle assessment of processes and products; assess the impact of expected changes in the energy sector on the sustainability of a manufacturing company.

Profession characteristics

Professionals in the fields of civil engineering and machinery engineering – technically trained professionals working for organizations that are required or interested in developing a sustainability strategy (ESG report), a report on the implementation of a sustainability strategy, or implementing specific measures (e.g., ESG managers, executives developing corporate strategies in response to current legislation, sustainability experts).

Fulfilment criteria

Module 1 will end with a quiz verifying the acquired knowledge, and after its successful completion, participants will choose Module 2 or Module 3 for the second semester according to their professional orientation. To complete the program, they must have completed the partial quizzes in individual subjects (continuous assessment), achieved minimum participation in direct teaching, and defended the project developed in Module 2 or Module 3. The final classification will be: excellent - A (100–90%), very good - B (89–80%), good - C (79–70 %), satisfactory - D (69–60%), sufficient - E (59–50 %), failed - F (49–0 %).
