Chemistry, Technology and Properties of Materials

Original title in Czech: Chemie, technologie a vlastnosti materiálůFCHAbbreviation: BKCO_CHMAcad. year: 2018/2019

Programme: Chemistry and Chemical Technologies

Length of Study: 3 years

Accredited from: 20.7.2005Accredited until: 31.8.2019

Profile

Students will acquire necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills applicable especially in the following fields of fine and special chemicals manufacture: printing industry; agrochemistry; paper industry; materials for electrical engineering industry; housing and household chemistry; chemistry for building industry; manufacture of paints and lacquers; surface treatment; pharmaceutical industry; cosmetic industry; textile industry; processing and use of biomaterials; production of special and final polymers; photography, image and film processing; and image communication. Alumni are supposed to work at technical positions in plants, in management or in research and development in the above specified industries. They acquire necessary knowledge and abilities for further study of master programs accredited at the BUT Faculty of Chemistry or other master programs dealing with chemistry or chemical technology disciplines.

Key learning outcomes

The „ Chemistry, technology and properties of materials“ study program provides students with essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills that can be applied in control and evaluation of basic parameters of chemical technologies in the following fields: production and processing of plastics, composites, ceramics, silicates and cements; surface treatment of metallic or non-metallic materials in relation to environment protection and environment quality control. The students are thoroughly trained in proper and exact processing of laboratory experiment results and production parameters and they also get proper background in quality control. They can also apply to study master programs accredited at the BUT Faculty of chemistry and also to enrol in other master study programs oriented on chemistry and chemical technology.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

The graduates of the „Chemistry, technology and properties of materials“ branch master chemical and technological principles of preparation and processing of both synthetic and natural polymers, cement, lime, ceramics and other inorganic adhesives and special cements. They are familiarized with mechanisms and kinetics of synthetic and modification reactions and with operation of individual technological components of production lines. They are acquainted with relationships between structure of non-metallic materials and their chemical-physical properties. They are able to modify qualities of materials using proper chemical, physical, and technological methods and procedures to get optimal utility properties of manufactured materials and products. The graduates master manufacturing technologies for production of the above materials and basic principles of product development and design. They have also capacity to evaluate interaction of polymer materials with components of environment regarding lifespan of the material and its influence on environment. The graduates are familiar with the use of chemically oriented literature and they also familiarize with basics of commercial law and patent right, management of human resources and economy of businesses.

Entry requirements

Written entrance examination test checks ability/competence of applicants to study chemistry at university level. Applicants are given points for correct answers; a notional pass mark is applied to this examination. The applicants will be enrolled on condition of either successful passing the entrance examination or fulfilment of requirements for granting dispensation. Current information on admission regulations is available at http://www.fch.vutbr.cz/cs/zajemce-o-studium/bakalarske-studium.html.
